At TaxBit, every employee brings a unique perspective and skillset.
In our TaxBit Team Spotlight Series, we’ll get to know the team members behind our success.
This week, we’d like to highlight Karl Keppner, Staff Engineer at TaxBit.
I'm originally from Basalt, Idaho. A tiny half mile by half mile town in South East, Idaho. (Yes, nerds are everywhere, even in the country.) I graduated college with a BS in Computer Information Technology. I also served in the Idaho Army National Guard as a logistician.
Prior to TaxBit, I've worked at companies in multiple industries including: motorsports, health and wellness, telecom, and government.
I chose TaxBit because it was a blend of two passions—cryptocurrency and technology.
I'm on the Infrastructure team; our purpose is to ensure our software is up and running as it should be.
To accomplish this, we get to take different products and combine them together into an infrastructure that our awesome software engineers can build on.
You can think about it like building with Lego. There are limitless options when building a castle. We're responsible for building the castle that TaxBit customers need the most.
This is a multidisciplinary function, so we constantly research and make decisions on how to improve the structure as TaxBit grows and matures.
The people. There isn't a single person that I don't enjoy working with across the company.
I believe that crypto and digital assets are the future. I love the freedom it gives to every individual, regardless of demographics or economic status. It expands access to financial industries to anyone with internet access. It isn't limited to the traditional banking hours of 8 AM to 6 PM. There's so much more that I love about crypto, but working at TaxBit lets me play a role in reducing the difficulty for regular people to get started in digital asset investing.
I like to play games, and I love to learn new things. Board games and video games are my go-to, but there’s something about learning something new that's so rewarding. A recent project I completed was to design and install a customized solar solution for my house. I wanted to be connected to the grid, but not dependent on it. Most solar companies didn’t have a suitable solution for this, or it was extremely overpriced. I decided to learn and do it myself. Don’t worry, I followed all code and regulations—it was inspected and approved!
Someday, I’ll make it to the Scandinavian countries. There is something romantic about the history and landscapes there; the ruggedness of the mountains and fjords, and the harshness of the weather.
Favorite movie: Mad Max: Fury Road. They actually made all those vehicles, how cool is that?
Go-to karaoke song: Never done it, never will. My social inhibitions would never allow it.
Favorite food: Street tacos, they just have to be authentic Mexican street tacos.
Current Netflix or streaming binge: Vikings on the History Channel
Podcasts I listen to: What I listen to depends on my current interests, but ones that I always find myself going back to are Darknet Diaries, Tim Ferris, Jordan Harbinger, and Joe Rogan.
